Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle, safe and very effective therapy for the prevention and treatment of various conditions as well as the enhancement of health. It can be used to treat people of all ages, from birth to old age.
Cranial work applies appropriate touch at the right tissue levels to stimulate the body's self-healing and corrective mechanism, the same as with osteopathic treatment elsewhere for the body. The therapist uses their hands to apply a touch that touch may be light, may remain static or move, or may introduce tension or traction to the body.
The Cranial-Sacral system is a system like any other system in the body, as, for example, the respiratory, circulatory or urinary systems. As in any body system, there are skin muscles, bones, circulation, organs and nerves involved in the cranial system, with the added factor of the cerebrospinal fluid flow.
Cranial refers to the head, and sacrum relates to the triangular bone at the base of the spine. These are connected through the Dural membrane sleeve which encases the spinal cord and facilitates the reciprocal movement between the two. The cerebral spinal fluid is produced in the brain (by the choroid plexuses), in the ventricles (pockets in the brain), at a certain rhythm and bathes the brain as well as the sleeves of the nerves and the connective tissue (fascia).
Cranial Osteopathy for Babies and Children
It is a common belief that "because they are so young" babies and children should have no stresses or strains in their bodies. Birth is one of the most stressful events of our lives, the child is subjected to large forces, as they are pushed through the birth canal.
The soft bones in a baby's head will overlap, bend and warp as the baby descends and many babies are born with oddly shaped heads as a result. Usually, as the baby suckles, cries and yawns the head can be seen to lose the extreme moulded shape. However, this process can be incomplete, especially if the birth has been difficult or was assisted with forceps. As a result, the baby may have to live with some very uncomfortable stresses within its head and body.
These stresses can be caused by:
Compression in the bones and linings of the skull which makes the baby uncomfortable, with a constant feeling of pressure in the structures of the head. Lying down may make things worse due to the increased pressure on the head.
Pressure on nerves of the lips, cheeks and face which can interfere with the ability to latch on and suckle comfortably and efficiently.
Tension in muscles and soft tissues when the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle and tissue under the ribs, is pulled out of shape by a fast or difficult birth it may compromise the stomach's ability to retain food, and may result in trapped gas.
General tension. When a mother is stressed a baby in utero will absorb her stress. This may cause the baby to be in a continually high alert state, find it difficult to relax fully and have difficulty sleeping. One theory suggests that when the baby is stressed food does not remain in the stomach long enough to digest fully, causing the production of gas on the intestines which leads to discomfort - colic.
In older children, There is now much medical evidence that stress during pregnancy and a difficult birth can lead to problems later on.
Problems commonly treated by Cranial Osteopathy:
TMJ Syndrome, Malocclusion Ear, Nose, and Throat Issues, Sinusitis, Dental and Orthodontic Problems, Chronic Ear Infections and Tonsillitis, Neurological Disorders, Head Trauma, Migraines, Headaches, Post Concussion Syndrome, Post-MVA Inertial Injury (Whiplash), Visual Disturbances, Pediatric Disorders, Sucking Difficulties, Brachycephaly / Plagiocephaly / Flat head syndrome.
